I have been using CareFresh bedding in my smaller boa cages for about a year. This bedding is a good alternative to aspen or other wood-based substrates.
Why? It is non-abrasive and very absorbent. It is made out of a cellulose-based wood pulp material, and is soft to the touch. I switched to this bedding from aspen shavings after one of my snakes got a splinter stuck in the skin of his nose and developed a bump that had to be aspirated and treated by a vet.
If misted with water, this bedding holds humidity well. It is also great for spot cleaning.
Of course, if you used this style bedding for a large cage, each cleaning would cost you a ton of money! I would recommend paper for larger cages (I use paper for my large cages due to ease of cleaning).
CareFresh can be found at the small animal section of most pet stores (the larger, "natural" unbleached color is much cheaper than the died or bleached colors available). It is pretty much equivalent to Desert Snow, which is a bleached cellulose product sold for use specifically with reptiles.
Anyone else used it? |
